The New York Times just ran a front page story on the target marketing of Broadway shows to African-American females and despite some of the theater's overall attendance numbers being down, the momentum for Black audiences is up – particularly for the hit show Memphis, the recipient of the 2010 Tony Award for Best Musical. ESSENCE.com interviewed the star of Memphis Montego Glover to get her perspective on this growing trend.

The nominations for the 2010 Drama Desk Awards were announced this morning by Cady Huffman and Brian Stokes Mitchell at the New York Friars Club. As previously reported, Patti LuPone will host the awards ceremony to be held at the LaGuardia Concert Hall at Lincoln Center on Sunday, May 23, beginning at 9pm.

A national tour of the hit Broadway musical, which was chosen as one of the Best Shows of 2009 by Broadway.com, will kick off at the Orpheum Theatre in the show's namesake Tennessee city in October 2011. Strapped Students Get A Chance To See Broadway Firsthand

New York and New Jersey students in arts-poor schools are getting the theatrical chance of a lifetime thanks to a dedicated English teacher and some arts enthusiasts, Tonic reports. Inspire Change, an educational program initially funded by authors and producers for Memphis, allows students a chance to get up-close and personal with the stars of the show, and its subject matter, which includes civil rights and music.

Memphis Original Cast Recording to Receive Nationwide Distribution from Rhino Records

The original cast recording of the new Broadway musical Memphis will be distributed nationwide by Rhino Records, beginning March 30. The CD distributed by Rhino will contain 19 songs and feature a different bonus track: an acoustic version of "The Music of My Soul" with piano and vocals by Bryan.

An original musical makes its way to Broadway

First, it’s about the story, says Sue Frost.

"I have to be engaged," she says, explaining why she is one of a platoon of producers (they number more than two dozen) who have brought something a little more risky than usual to Broadway this season.

Their project? Memphis, an original musical, one not based on a movie, play, television series or cartoon. And there are no stars in the leading roles of an interracial couple caught up in the changing music scene of the early 1950s.

Boston Conservatory grad Chad Kimball – who stars in the new Broadway musical Memphis – is still mourning the loss of the North Shore Music Theatre. Without the NSMT, which closed over the summer because of financial troubles, Kimball says he might not have his face plastered on a New York City billboard right now. It was at the NSMT that Kimball starred as southern DJ Huey Calhoun when the original musical Memphis debuted in 2003.

Memphis, the new rock 'n' roll musical penned by Joe DiPietro and David Bryan, will arrive on Broadway in the fall of 2009 at a theatre to be announced.

Based on a concept by George W. George, Memphis features book and lyrics by Joe DiPietro (I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change) and a score and lyrics by Bon Jovi's David Bryan. DiPietro and Bryan are also represented with the Off-Broadway musical The Toxic Avenger, which begins performances at New World Stages later this month.
